Students event raises money for U of M Caner Center

In this photo sophomore Bridget Brown, junior Emily Muysenberg, and senior Dan Thelen go over points from previous games played throughout the day to try and figure out which teams will move on and which teams will go home.
They are part of a five person group for RPL 430, other group member names are sophomores Nicole Kress and Tracy Miller, which they have to put on an event at some point in the semester and raise money for an organization or charity. In this groups case they chose to raise money for the U of M Comprehensive Cancer Center, their goal was to raise $400 in donations, entry fees, and raffle tickets and in the end they raised $576 to donate.
The event went from 2pm and ended around 5:30pm and they had 11 teams sign up to play, all of this taking place in the Student Activity Center’s (The SAC) volleyball courts.

Lighting

My first lighting set was in a basement with only one bulb turned on, I names this one Spooky lighting because the basement I was in was really creepy with only one light on and then light coming through dirty windows. I was just showing that wit little amounts of light you can have a creepy (or whatever mood you’re going for) picture. I didn’t use my flash in the picture that I picked because I though the light looked softer than when I used a flash. (You can see the difference in some of the pictures in which ones I used flash and whish ones I just let the bare bulb and window light do what they do)

In the second set of pictures is Tracie Sivec, a 23 year old Senior from Bad Axe MI. is studying for her first exam in one of her harder classes. The way I set this room up was by shutting both window blinds and putting a blanket over one of them to make the room a little darker, but not too dark that she couldn’t see her book. I then turned on the neon sign above her head to add a little color and turned my flash off and started taking pictures. They came out a little dark but I like the way they look with a nice calm and dim mood.

Inspiration

As a Photojournalism major one would assume that I have a bunch of photographers that I look up to and want to some day follow in their photo ways, but believe me or not I don’t really have any famous photographer role models.
I have some photographers that I look up to and those people are: Ryan Breight, Jeff Keson, Myles Mears and a few others. I wouldn’t be surprised if none of these names are familiar to you because they probably won’t be familiar to many people. These names are those of my peers and friends. I’ve grown up learning about photography with them and from them, getting ideas from these people, and watching the way they do their work. That to me is more inspiring in any kind of work I do than looking at photography online from people I have never met and probably never will.
Aside from those names I have mentioned and a couple of other people, photographers don’t really inspire me. Words inspire me, whether those words come from books or songs, they are what push me in any direction I may go in.
Lyrically speaking one of my favorite songwriters/musicians is Jon Foreman from the band Switchfoot. His songs really make me think and just go into a zone of zero stress; they make me happy and are the cause of some of my better creative days. It’s hard to explain why music is more of my focal point for pictures I take but it’s just one of the main things that makes me want to pick my camera up.
Books also hold huge amounts of inspiration for me in my photography, I am a huge fan of Charles De LINT. He writes my favorite book of all time, it is called Blue Girl. I have read and reread the book more times than I can count and every time I read it I get a new project out of it. Not always a photo project, but something creative.
I can’t honestly say that no other type of photography inspires me, growing up I used to love looking at National Geographic for all of the amazing photos in the pages and I always said that National Geographic would be my goal for my dream job.
Having a famous or more well known photographer would probably be a better inspiration role model to write about but as for now I am just going to have to stick to those people who I truly look up to and to the words I love so much in books and songs.

Optimist or Pessimist

I like the idea of the glass being half empty or half full and the relation it has to people's answers...are they optimistic about things or are they pessimistic? What does the glass look like to you?

Lighting set up

Too Young

Too Young 2

Too Young shows a bride and groom posing together but they are shown as a doll and a teddy bear to give the feeling of youth. The bear is dress in a dress uniform for the Army and the bride has on her beautiful dress. I have friends in the Army and they are both 21 and younger yet they are already married and living the lives that many struggling 40 something couples are facing. This is just basically showing that I think even if you are going into the Army or any other armed service I think getting married at 18 or 19 years old is way too young.

Set up for my Fashion Assignment

Here AJ gets serious in a spiffy looking black outfit, something he usually wears while at fraternity meetings.

Krantzy Lighting

This is my roommate Steve Krantz, or Krantzy Pants as I like to call him. He is in a band here in Mount Pleasant called Day In Day Out so he is always sitting around our house playing his guitar. I had the unfortunate situation of not being able to check out all of the stuff I needed so I made it work by holding my strobe and bouncing it off the walls and the ceiling, sometimes with it uncovered and sometimes with my snoot on it to direct it where I wanted it. These are two of my better results.

When you think of Bob Marley you think of happiness. When you think of happiness you think of peace and love. When you think of peace and love in Bob Marley's world...well this is what you get.
For this picture the light is behind me and I'm kneeling on the floor in front of the table.

Just a more straight on view with the prop set-up actually on the poster. For this one the light is at the side and I'm standing on something to take the shot over the top of the table.

This is my play on a snow angel except with it being more close to Halloween than Christmas it is my Halloween angel. I basically had my roommate lay on the ground and pretend like she was 5 and playing in the snow.

I like this one because my plan was to take a flashlight and kind of light up some of the background to add a creepy tone to the picture but I noticed after a practice picture that the lights did that enough. I also like it because in the last second or two I moved the camera slightly and my roommate closed her eyes so it looks like she is praying in a creepy area with a ghost over her shoulder.

This Is Jeff Keson he is a Senior here at CMU and is studying Art History and Photography. He is also a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon and Leadership Safari. I found he was an easy subject to work with because he not only knows what he is doing working in the studio but can also get infront of the camera and feel comfortable too.

I really like the angle of this picture and how good the shadow looks behind Jeff. I just think this looks like a really cool picture.
